Individual Therapy

These are independent sessions with the participant and the speech-language pathologist. Graduate interns also facilitate these sessions with the speech-language pathologist. Treatment goals are specifically tailored to reflect the unique communication needs of each client and may target the recovery of specific functions such as speaking, listening, reading and writing. In addition, individual treatment focuses on introducing compensatory techniques to promote efficient communication in functional situations.

Small Group Therapy

The dynamics of group therapy provide opportunities for clients to practice newly acquired communication skills within socially meaningful situations. Each session highlights a different topic or theme to stimulate discussion, practice vocabulary, reading and writing. Participants attend group sessions without their partners, which affords them independence and the opportunity to learn from one another. All group sessions are guided by a speech-language pathologist as well as graduate interns to ensure that each client participates and benefits from conversational interactions while maintaining a focus on individual communication goals.

Community Integration Activities

To ensure that skills learned in individual sessions are transferred to real life situations, community integration activities are an important component of the InteRACT program. As a group, participants go to various places (e.g. mall, library etc.) each with his/her own individual communication assignment. Partners may have their own assignments during outings as well.

Partnership Component

Communication does not occur in isolation; it is the basis for social interaction with others and our environment. By definition, it involves the successful conveyance of a message between at least two people - the sender and the receiver. For these reasons, clients of the program must be accompanied by a partner. We define partners as caregivers, spouses, family members or friends who are involved in the daily life of the person with aphasia. Partners actively participate in designated therapy and support group activities for the purpose of encouraging communication carry-over both inside and outside the home or family unit. Partners gain a better understanding of aphasia through experiential based learning opportunities and become skilled at using strategies to facilitate effective communication.

In addition to therapy support, communication partners are responsible for overseeing any personal needs (i.e. dressing, bathing, meals not provided by InteRACT, laundry, transfers, medication monitoring, etc.) that their partners may require.

Computer Lab Activities

Interactive computer lab activities are an integral component. Programs are tailored to the needs of each client based on the individual's communication profile and specific client goals. An important focus of the computer lab is functional usage, which includes email and Internet access. Computer work is intended to compliment conventional therapy, and may target:

· improved reading skills,
· understanding,
· verbal expression,
· speech & voice production,
· concentration skills,
· problem solving and
· occupational related skills.

Therapeutic Recreation

Therapeutic Recreation uses recreation experiences to help people make the most of their lives. During individual sessions, the therapists focus on exploring leisure as a means to maintain wellness. They help participants explore new leisure opportunities and assist them in finding ways to become involved in previous activities. During the program each participant has the opportunity to attend an individual "sample activity" with the Recreation Therapist, to practice or try a new leisure activity, such as a golf lesson, swimming class, painting class, etc. Connections with home community resources are provided.

In addition to individual recreation sessions, participants and partners attend scheduled group evening activities and outings lead by the Recreation Therapists. Group sessions focus on adaptations and fun!

Physiotherapy

Group classes to support physical exercise are offered several times a week, and are led by a physiotherapist.
